Spring reminds us that while winter may rule for a time, it does not rule for all time.

Standing on my deck, feeling the warmth of the sun radiate across my face, I feel my entire body exhale. This long-forgotten feeling is like putting on a favorite pair of jeans that hug you in all the right places, or sitting in that super cozy spot that molds to your shape, or smelling the simmering aroma of comfort food as it pervades the house.
Never have I been so grateful for some sun and a reasonably decent temperature.
Why?
Because eleven. Eleven! By last count we have had eleven polar vortexes this winter when the normal is one every other year. Wow. No wonder I feel like an alien walking outside without being burrowed in hoodies, coats, and anything lined with sherpa.
Oh to feel the familiar again and stretch in the luxuriousness of it all.
Spring is giving us a teaser of what is to come. Instead of silence in the dark morning hours, birds sing their tunes in dawn’s light. Buds of green sprout from brown, dull branches. Bright blue skies and a brisk wind carry the giggles of children playing outside.
A reminder that no matter the length or frigidity of winter, spring and all its glory will return. True to form, it may not arrive when and how we desire—but in its own time.
My hands are itching to get into the earth again. To escape the man-made shelter of home and breathe freely amidst nature’s sanctuary. Whatever feelings the day brings, I know that to be centered in the earth among plants and flowers will allow me the space to breathe. To create and maintain something beautiful in a world that is often not.
Winter is an allegory of the trials of life and spring is its conqueror.
Tendrils of ice grasp us and attempt to make us forget that winter is but a season. Spring reminds us that while winter may rule for a time, it does not rule for all time.
Spring is coming. And with it, all the goodness and bounty it brings.
Turn your face towards the sun. The earth is unthawing along with our spirits. The time for new beginnings, intentions, and healing is drawing near.
A new season awaits.
Oh, what a feeling.
