Purpose Amidst Turmoil

Writer's picture: Holly BillsHolly Bills

Navigating a repeating loop of emotions can lead to frustration and discontent. Purpose is the skilled and steady hand that turns our struggles into masterpieces.

Emotions are the watercolors within our world, one bleeding into the next, expanding beyond the boundaries of where we expect them to go. Altering the artistic vision we have for the construct of our life and requiring a high level of skill to navigate the beginning, middle, and end.

The mixed bag of emotions can come individually, all at once, and at other times on a repeating loop.

Admittedly I am one to act. If there is something to be solved or fixed or done, I do it. Maybe it’s the Type A personality, or the Aries astrology, or the Mama Bear—but at this point in my life—I know myself. Suffice it to say, the repeating loop variety of emotions is not beneficial to my overall state of being. Which is why I feel so absolutely, infuriatingly, frustrated.

Because this. This I cannot solve, fix, or do alone.

Which is how I found myself sitting in my library, my refuge, attempting to cleanse myself and restore a bit of peace. Surrounded by books, my gaze flits from shelf to shelf. Books written recently and other hundreds of years ago. A cacophony of voices and wisdom speaking beyond the generation in which they were written, beyond even the specific issue the author spoke to at the time.

Stories and history are a mirror to earth’s humanity. Every struggle, every accomplishment. Every horror, every dream. Everything we rail against and all we aspire to be.

All of it there for us to decipher, to use as guides to gather inspiration, heal the broken, gain knowledge, and find the will when we need it the most. To find our purpose amongst and amidst the turmoil we find ourselves in.

Purpose is the skilled and steady hand that turns our struggles into masterpieces.

Lest we forget, the words and actions of all who came before us were not seen through the lens we see them through today. Wisdom was discounted because of whose mouth it was uttered from. Many fought the good fight; some won, some lost, and others never lived long enough to see the fruits of their labors.

It is a difficult thing in this instant access world to think of your purpose not being fulfilled within your lifetime. And yet, in the broad scope of humanity, that is the rule more than the exception. Regardless of whether your purpose is fulfilled immediately or in the long arc of history, it stands as a testament to those who come after. To those who seek refuge and understanding, to those who face the insurmountable, to those who choose to fuel their purpose through the long black night and refuse to succumb to the latest iteration of wrongs.

Purpose transcends.

And in that, we must all have faith.
